Okay, but some problems |
We visited Santorini in September 2010,
but the archeological place was closed due to the works. When it will be possible to enter to the place?

Was orginally going to venture up to Ancient Thira by donkey but instead caught small shuttle bus from base of mountain in Kamari. A map with descriptions was available which helped identify ruins. Certainly a good hike to the top but well worth the effort and a must do to see the magnificent scenery. Don't rush the visit, absorb the atmosphere and admire the tenacity of this ancient lifestyle. Artists from around the world scattered throughout ruins doing amazing artwork. An amazing place with so much history!

Ancient Thira is very interesting but from Perissa there is a long walk to the top (very tiring)but from Kamari there is a road leading to the top where the city was found. It is good to the the ruins of the city and how life was like for them before the volcano erupted.

The road up to ancient Thira is a steep series of switch backs - very narrow, but has a few pull out spots. Parts of the archelogical site can be seen from the parking area, but to really scope out the whole area a rough, steep trail must be followed. The day we went, there was a 'park ranger' at the top to keep people from disturbing the ruins.
Very interesting place, great views, highly recommended if you aren't afraid of heights.
